In addition to my clinical practice, I am an analyst of news photos and visual journalism, and a frequent lecturer and writer on visual politics, photojournalism, and visual and media literacy.

I am also the founder and publisher of ReadingThePictures.org. Reading the Pictures is the only site on the web dedicated daily to visual politics and the analysis of news images. Launched in 2004, Reading the Pictures is closely followed by the news and visual media, the photojournalism community and university journalism, photojournalism and communications programs, and citizens interested in politics and visual culture. The site also hosts the unique online discussion series, Chatting the Pictures, publishing short videos analyzing key news image of our times.

Reading the Pictures was a Webby Awards finalist for Best Political Blog in 2006. The site was also credentialed by the DNC to cover the 2008 Democratic National Convention. In 2011, Reading the Pictures won a Picture of the Year, International award for Multimedia. I have written for the New York Times Magazine, American Photo, Huffington Post, The New Republic, Salon, Ozy.com, and I am a contributor to the Columbia Journalism Review.
